Biotechnology is a technology that utilizes biological systems, living organisms or parts of this to develop or create different products.

Brewing and baking bread are examples of processes that fall within the concept of biotechnology. Such traditional processes usually utilize the living organisms in their natural form, while the more modern form of biotechnology will generally involve a more advanced modification of the biological system or organism.

With the development of genetic engineering in the 1970s, research in biotechnology (and other related areas such as medicine, biology etc.) developed rapidly because of the new possibility to make changes in the organisms' genetic material (DNA).

Analysis and Control of Microbial Systems: Analysis of microbial systems represents a field of science denoted microbial ecology. On the other hand, control of such systems is an essential tool in the applied field of technology called environmental biotechnology.

Microbial ecology may be defined as the scientific studies of interactions and basic principles that determine the distribution and abundance of microorganisms. It is, therefore, a basic platform for analyses of ecological problems as well as a fundament for development of new technologies.

Environmental biotechnology is the application of biotechnology for solving environmental problems, both in the environment or in man-made ecosystems. In open systems, this can only be achieved by applying ecological principles and cooperating with the local microbiota based on a "join them" instead of a "beat them" strategy.

Biopolymers and Biomaterial: Marine biopolymers are highly abundant but underexploited renewable biomasses. Besides their natural biological and structural functions, the biopolymers can be tailored to new biomaterials with novel functionalities. A high level of understanding and control of the molecular architecture of biopolymers is crucial in understanding the functional properties and developing targeted functions.

Food Science: The Food Science division aims at contributing to an enhanced and safe utilization of existing and new raw materials for a sustainable food production.

Microbial Biotechnology: The Division of Microbial Biotechnology is performing basic, experimental and theoretical research on microorganisms to increase the understanding of their structure and function both at the molecular and cellular levels. The knowledge is applied to develop new biologically based production processes.
